The lute, although favored by nobility and the circles or higher learning during the Renaissance, is still not well-known today. Despite being now famous worldwide, some misleading myths persist, such as that it was the favorite instrument of troubadours. It is common for people to be amazed when they learn that it is a polyphonic instrument, meaning that it can play several melodies at the same time. The lute was not only in fashion, but its enormous technical capabilities, combined with one of the most delicate sounds, made it the ideal instrument to depict the humanist spirit prevalent during those times.
This program is a recreation of the repertoire that lutenists performed in European courts during the Renaissance. Featuring the Italian avant-garde; the poetry with which musicians made their lutes speak in Shakespeare's England; the colorful sounds of Spanish pieces for vihuela; the sounds of the deep shadows of the German Black Forest; and the very refined French court, we can relive the magic that surrounds those forgotten sounds of the past.
